Royal Brighton Pavilion

Restoration of a grand hsitorical building

A neo-classical building with a Royal heritage

Royal Brighton Pavilion was constructed as a seaside pleasure Palace of King George IV. In 1787 the architect, Henry Holland, was instructed by the King, to extend the orginal lodging house into a neo-classical building known as the Marine Pavilion. Kings and Queens have visited the Palace over the centuries and in WW1 it even became a hospital for injured soldiers; at first to the Indian Army who were fighting for the British and then British soldiers up until 1920.

It is now managed by the Royal Pavilion & Musuems Trust.

The craft of a stonemason to restore

DBR Southern were commissioned in 2020 to carry out detailed facade conservation works to complicated domes, minarets, finials and parapets. This restoration work included the redecoration and stone work repair to the stone dressings and, in particular, the exquisite Jali screens. We supplied sawn Hartham Park Ground Stone to DBR Southern for this project.

The restoration of Brighton Pavilion featured on an episode of Heritage Rescue in 2021. It showcased the craftmanship of the stone masonry skills onsite and the extraction and processing of Hartham Park Bath Stone.

Special thanks to DBR Ltd for the use of the images.
